Before you mulch, Do This!

Mulch installation is an incredible way to not only spruce up your home's appearance, but also to help with drainage, water retention, and moderate weed prevention in your natural areas.

While you're looking at mulch options, consider these elements for your project! Color: The color you ultimately choose matters a lot. All mulch fades with time, but dyed mulch can lose its luster more quickly in times of high rain and high sunlight. Be sure to consider the options available to you color-wise, and remember that darker stained mulch can leave marks on vinyl if the installation isn't careful!

Quality: Double hammered hardwood versus cypress, shredded pine versus larger chipped mulch, the quality of the mulch you select will impact the results of your project. Thicker chunks of wood will decompose more slowly, and lighter woods can be more susceptible to wind and disruption by blowers.

Fees: Some companies try to upsell landscaping fabric underneath the mulch. Don't fall for it! Landscaping fabric makes weeding mulched beds harder, and the mulch (when installed to a depth of 3 to 4 inches) already has a preventative element for weeds. The landscaping fabric is useful under stones and gravel, but for mulch, pass it over! (Besides, landscaping fabric prevents the decomposing mulch from mixing with the soil and fertilizing your beds!)

Removal: Existing mulch in your beds that has already begun breaking down should not be removed before mulch is added. That mulch will continue to do its job underneath the fresh layer, and the nutrients breaking down inside that mulch will continue to fertilize your natural areas. Also, having to remulch to a depth of 3 to 4 inches costs more when there's that much more mulch to spread.
